Potentially dumb question: Why has there never been a BMW M7?

A decade or so ago, it would have been obvious: “Because luxury car!”

But now that doesn’t seem to matter…Mercedes has the AMG S-Class, and while there is no Audi RS8, the S8 is faster than any 7 series AFAIK, and the RS7 does sort of do the “fast executive” job nicely.

I guess there’s the M6 GC as more of a direct RS7 competitor.

So maybe the complementary question is: Why does the AMG S-Class exist? And why does no one try to take it on? Is it really that hard to beat the S-Class in the luxury segment? (I was flipping through Evo magazine’s review directory a few days ago, and from what I could see in just a 30-second glance, the 7-Series was the only car on there to score less than 3 stars!)

I read a few years ago that they were thinking about making an M745xi, but I don’t know what happened to that.

The S8 is a direct competitor to both S-Class AMGs. It’s quicker than the S65. I have no idea why an M7 doesn’t exist, but I feel like with this new generation coming out, it might. I sure hope it does.

Probably because the 7 series doesn’t sell enough to justify it. But then somehow BMW can justify the 3GT, which I never see on the road. Nothing they do makes sense, anyways.

That’s a really good question. There has, for the longest time, been the Alpina B7, but no M7.. There’s a rumor its actually coming out; hopefully that’s true. The new 7 Series is going to blow the S-Class out of the water, in terms of tech.

On a slight side note what I think BMW should also make is a M7 (aka 8) Series Coupe; make it AWD with an updated version of their biturbo V8 to take on the the S63 Coupe. THAT would be one hell of a car..

There’s the Alpina B7. It’s not hardcore like an AMG or RS, but its fast.

Wow, that is a brilliant idea. It would totally fit into their new “change the number of doors and change the series number as well” naming strategy.

Yeah Alpina is interesting…are there any “legendary” ones that are considered better than the official M cars? Most reviews I read in the European magazines say “Yeah it’s so refined and must be so great at 9324932043mph on the Autobahn, but y’know, it’s just not as sharp, it’s just not as refined, just get the M unless you live in Germany…”

That’s funny because I see 7 Series and more than enough 3GTs in Hong Kong all the time x)

i believe its because M = motorsport

all of the early M cars were developed with racing intentions. so in the pre-suv days... there was no reason to M-ify a 7.

then... mid-90’s or so... they started with convertible M’s. then came the SUV M’s. so i guess that theory is kind of shot as to why they do not develop one today.

it might have to do with being unable to get the M-ness (the driving feel) into a car that size. but then again, there are X5Ms (i haven’t driven one, so i dont know that the small M car feeling is carried out)

in my mind... the 6grand coupe is what the 7 should be. the 7 (pre-2002) had always been a smaller, sportier giant luxo barge, compared to an S class. but i suppose the company needs to make a seat for every butt.

Well, BMW does have the 760Li M-Sport - a twin-turbo V12 means it’s no slouch at all. In fact, I believe it’s quicker in the quarter mile than an equivalently priced S63 AMG. BMW did try and make the 7-Series bonkers once by shoving a V16 under the bonnet, but that never went beyond the prototype stage. But with the upcoming, carbon-fibered 7-Series coming up, there might be a possibility.

I wouldn’t call Alpina better than than the M cars. They target a different audience. For the most part Alpina is going after the people that want a very fast GT-type car. The M cars are suppoused to be very fast cars that are track-worthy. Not that Alpina’s are bad on the track, just they are not as hard-edge as the M cars are.
